Dubai International Airport (DXB) is poised to maintain its status as the world’s busiest airport for international travelers, despite a notable dip in passenger numbers during the second quarter of 2026. This decline is attributed to disruptions caused by regional conflict and subsequent flight cancellations. In the period from April to June, DXB managed to accommodate 13 million passengers, a significant decrease compared to the 22.5 million who passed through in the same timeframe the previous year. Overall, the passenger volume for the first half of the year fell to 31.5 million, marking a 31.3% drop from year-on-year figures.
Paul Griffiths, the CEO of Dubai Airports, remains optimistic about the recovery of passenger traffic in the latter half of the year. He anticipates that the resumption of international airline services, alongside Emirates and flydubai’s efforts to restore most of their route networks, will bolster the numbers. Despite the current downturn, the airport is still projected to handle around 70 million passengers by the end of 2026, although this figure is lower than the 95.2 million recorded last year. The ambitious goal of reaching 100 million annual passengers has now been deferred to 2027.
Currently, Dubai International Airport has recuperated to nearly 86% of its previous operational capacity, with 56 airlines actively servicing the hub. This is a reduction from the approximately 90 airlines that were operating before the onset of the regional conflict, which significantly impacted aviation operations in the area. Nevertheless, the airport is preparing for further recovery, especially as the winter travel season approaches.
As more international carriers are expected to reinstate their flights, DXB is hopeful for a resurgence in passenger traffic. Key markets such as India, Saudi Arabia, and the United Kingdom continue to play a vital role in the airport’s operations. The expectation is that the winter months will see a further increase in activity as connections with these and other regions are reestablished.
