The visit of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to Germany underscores the growing strategic alliance between the two nations, rooted in a long history of collaboration across various fields. Established in 1972, diplomatic relations between the UAE and Germany have flourished over the years, particularly in political, economic, energy, and cultural sectors. This relationship has seen significant expansion, with trade and investment emerging as pivotal areas of cooperation.
In recent years, the UAE has become Germany’s top trading partner in the Gulf region, with bilateral trade reaching over Dh57 billion ($15.52 billion) last year. A robust economic relationship is evident, with approximately 2,000 German companies operating within the UAE. Among these are prominent names such as BMW, Siemens, ThyssenKrupp, and Deutsche Bahn, reflecting the depth of industrial ties between the two countries.
Energy collaboration has also been a cornerstone of UAE-German relations. The two countries have partnered in renewable energy initiatives, climate action efforts, and strategies aimed at decarbonisation and ensuring energy security. A notable development occurred in 2022 when the UAE and Germany signed an agreement to bolster energy security and industrial cooperation. This agreement includes the supply of UAE liquefied natural gas to Germany and joint ventures focused on clean energy and climate-friendly projects.
Beyond trade and energy, the partnership extends into research, technology, and infrastructure, alongside cultural exchanges that have enriched bilateral ties. The formal elevation of political ties came in 2004 with the signing of a strategic partnership agreement. This agreement encompasses various areas of mutual interest, including regional security, economic cooperation, and research initiatives, further solidifying the relationship between the two nations.
