The United Arab Emirates is actively pursuing new pathways for its energy exports and trade, aiming to lessen its reliance on the Strait of Hormuz due to the ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran. As part of these efforts, the UAE is working on expanding its port facilities along the eastern coast and developing alternative infrastructures such as pipelines and railways to establish new trade routes.
UAE presidential adviser Anwar Gargash emphasized that the nation is determined not to let its energy exports and economic activities be “held hostage” by the current geopolitical conflict. While he remains hopeful that ties with Iran could improve in the future, Gargash cautioned that rebuilding trust after recent hostilities could take years. He also urged for enhanced collaboration among Gulf Arab nations to address regional security challenges.
In a similar vein, Qatar has underscored the importance of greater self-reliance for Gulf countries. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed al-Ansari highlighted that while strategic relationships with the United States remain crucial, they should not be the sole foundation of the region’s security framework.
The significance of the Strait of Hormuz cannot be overstated, as it is a critical chokepoint for global energy supplies. Any disruption in this vital maritime corridor has the potential to drive up energy prices and heighten concerns about the global economic outlook. Gargash stressed that the freedom of navigation through this waterway should not be leveraged as a bargaining chip, advocating instead for reliable assurances to shield Gulf nations from future threats.
