Al Maktoum International Airport in Dubai is gearing up for a major expansion with the introduction of a 50-kilometre autonomous people mover network. This cutting-edge transportation system is set to navigate passengers across the extensive airport grounds via nine strategically placed stations. The ambitious construction project is slated for completion by December 2031, just in time for the anticipated launch of the airport’s inaugural phase in 2032. As future phases are rolled out, the driverless rail network is expected to expand to a total of 14 stations.
Once completed, the system is projected to become the largest automated people mover network globally, surpassing the current systems in place at major airports like Dallas Fort Worth and New York’s JFK. This development is part of the broader vision for Al Maktoum International, which aims to accommodate up to 260 million passengers and manage 12 million tonnes of cargo annually. Initially, the first phase will see the addition of the West Terminal, Concourse 1, and the advanced people mover, boosting the airport’s passenger capacity to 130 million per year.
The project not only enhances internal airport connectivity but also ties into a broader transportation framework. Plans are in place for an Airport Express Link, designed to connect Al Maktoum International with Dubai International Airport, facilitating smoother transitions for travelers. Moreover, future integration with Etihad Rail and the Dubai Metro is on the agenda, promising to further embed the airport within the region’s transport network.
With the introduction of this sophisticated transit system, Dubai is set to reinforce its status as a global aviation hub. The airport’s expansion underscores the emirate’s commitment to accommodating the growing demands of international travel and cargo movement, all while leveraging advanced technologies to enhance efficiency and passenger experience.
