The United Arab Emirates has voiced firm disapproval regarding recent declarations made by the Houthi group against Saudi Arabia, which included threats of launching a maritime blockade on the kingdom. The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement urging the global community to actively work towards the enforcement of United Nations Security Council resolutions pertinent to Yemen and ensuring maritime safety in the Red Sea.
Central to the UAE’s appeal is the emphasis on Resolution 2216, which pertains to the situation in Yemen, and Resolution 2722, which is designed to safeguard navigation rights and ensure unrestricted movement within the Red Sea. These resolutions are seen as crucial frameworks for maintaining peace and security in the region, particularly concerning maritime activities.
Reaffirming the principles of international law, the UAE underscored that the freedom of navigation in international waters is protected under the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. This legal framework guarantees the right of passage and is vital for the stability of maritime routes that are essential to global trade and regional peace.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the UAE also expressed unwavering support for Saudi Arabia, pledging solidarity with the kingdom in the face of threats to its security and stability.
